Meteor showers are so cool! This year we will have had the ability to see 7 different events. Meteor showers happen when a group of meteors come together at a particular time of year. Usually we see them when the Earth travels through the debris that the comet has shed during its orbit. The different showers are named by the constellation that the meteor falls in.Usually you can see the shower best when you are away from brightly lit towns or cities. If you can drive out to a spot that has little light other than the stars, you can usually see much better. You should position yourself at a spot so that you can see the horizon. You won't need any special equipment to see them, just make sure to give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness.
The showers that have passed already were the Quadrantids in January, Lyrids in April, Eta Aquarids in May, Perseids in August, Orionids in October. Last night you could see Leonids, and on the night of December 13th and 14th you will be able to see Geminids.
So on December 13th, grab a blanket call some friends, pack a thermos with something warm and find a nice place away from the city lights and enjoy the show.
