Doing laundry isn't a fun chore, but it can be one of the most simple with a good washing machine and dryer. Check out our list of the top searched washers for some of our users' favorites.A washer is an investment, so make sure you chose one that meets all your needs and will withstand the test of time. While some washers have lots of bells and whistles, like a touch screen, they don't necessarily make it any better. However, other extras like a hand-wash cycle and extra detergent or bleach dispensers can make your life a lot easier.
While browsing, also consider whether you want a front-loading or top-loading washer. Front-loading washers are considered to be more gentle on your clothing and use less water and energy. Top-loading washers are known to be less noisy and hold more clothing per wash cycle.
Along with finding a washer with a good warranty, choose one with structural integrity. Look for washers with a plastic or stainless steel drum so that it won't rust.
Before heading out to the appliance store, measure the space you plan to put your washer and dryer. If you have limited space, consider a space-saving washer dryer combo, like number 8 on our list.

I have a top loader Maytag Neptune that is less than 5 years old. I replaced the mother board in less than 2 years. Of course, I had to pay for the labor. Now the board was replaced again, along with a new inner and outer tub because it was leaking, causing damage to the clutch, transmition and I don't know what else. Maytag/Whirlpool does not stand behind their product at all. I agree that there are lemons in every brand, but I also had several reps tell me that these machines are nothing but trouble. Too bad they didn't tell me that when I bought it.
I owned a Maytag washer and dryer in 1980 and were still working when I bought this new pair. The reason for buying the new pair was to save water and electricity. As we are on a septic system, it helped with the water situation in our back yard. Buth the cost of repairing this thing every two years is ridiculous. I HATE it and the stress it has caused me. It went in for repairs a week before Thanksgiving and I still don't have it back. One fix leads to another problem.
Any recommendations for a water saving washing machine?

I've had Amana components for about 8 years now and I would give ANYTHING to have just bought another Kenmore. Forget about all the repair work that's been done to them, using the dryer is one of my most aggravating chores due to it's DESIGN flaw. When removing your clean, dry clothes, unless you remove them one item at a time, the lint trap will come out with the laundry - depositing all of it's trapped lint all over your clothes. grrr...

Many years ago I a Kenmore washer that was OK, when that broke I replaced it with a Whirlpool Cabrio that went back within a week because clothes weren't clean or rinsed. Next came my Maytag Neptune which I love! The tub is huge, the stain cycle is amazing, and I will never be without a front loader again. I'm disappointed to learn Maytag is owned by Whirlpool since I've now had two bad experiences with Whirlpool and won't try for a third. My Maytag is my second front loader (yrs ago had an old GE front loader that came with a house) and over the years I had forgotten how gentle front load action is on clothing as well how much cleaner clothes are. My kids have purchased front loaders for their homes - LGs and are pleased with theirs. Top loaders are relics-things of the past.

We have used a KitchenAid washer and dryer for over 16 years. We realize that we will probably need to shop for a new set in the not too distant future. Has KitchenAid gone out of the laundry business? If so, what is a good equivalent for their product. We have been very satisfied with KitchenAid products in general.

I have the Cabrio set. And I LOVE them. I have NO problems with them WHATSOEVER! HUGE tub. I have me and my 4 kids. Sooo it helps. When hubby comes home from Iraq it still washes like 7 pairs of his pants. That is alot compared to our other set! I have NOT one thing bad to say about them.

I worked for Whirlpool for 40 years, they are concerned with quality and price, it is hard to be competive in this world. Televisions made in the US, gone, are automobiles next. Appliances prices have not increased a whole lot over the years.I have replaced my WP units over the years and never because they went bad, I have the Calypso's now. Seven of the above 10 are WHirlpool owned, only the GE and LG's are not made by WP. Yes, the Kenmore's and even KitchenAid are made by WP. Some of them go down the same assembly lines, compare them closely at a store that sells multiple brands.

What crap! Front loaders are quieter and hold tons more laundry.
All washers on that list are either Whirlpool or LG. The one washer you don't see on the list is Speed Queen, a true commercial machine made for the home. Or save your money and get a Miele, the best washer on the planet.

I recently purchased the Frigadaire Gallery Series front load washer and dryer. No, I didnt get the top of the line because I didnt need all of those special features. But what I got, I do like and love!!! They have reduced my laundry time in half, the first month I saved $167.00 between my light and water bill!! So in just a few month they will have paid for themselves. I have two very tall boys and I can wash and dry 6 pairs of jeans under an hour!! I am very impressed....from the start. They use 1/3 less water than the top load I had and dry time is less than 1/2. Yes, I didnt get it at first on how they actually worked but man our clothes are cleaner, stay in better shape longer and always look new. My husband didnt believe me until he used them, now he is impressed. I can wash queen size quilts and not worry about the agitator tearing them apart now. I also use less laundry detergant and fabric softner and get better results than my old top load. So overall I am saving time, money and now doing my share of the Green thing for our earth.
One note if you have the top load washer and trade up to the top load....one bit of information you might what to know before you get all excited about using them(its not written anywhere) you need to have your front load drain line 4" above your drain line thats in the wall. Otherwise it will never work right it will self drain and cause you all sorts of frustration. So be aware of this one thing. I had to find out the hard way and kind of regetting getting them but once we figured it out...they are as good as gold.

"...it is hard to be competive in this world." Well, yeah, when nearly every brand is made by you and you have a captured market, and the few competitors out there make crap too, then it doesn't take much to be better product to lead the pack, but that doesn't mean you make a GOOD, QUALITY product. Whirlpool, put the quality into your product and raise the prices. People will pay for the quality of the machine prior to the direct drive revolution of the 80's.

Whirlpool Cabrio (Washer) should be called Whirlpool Crap. Started having problems with it after only after a little more than 6 months old. Have had the service repair man work on it so much he's almost part of the family now. No wonder these companies are going down the drain. I sure won't buy a Whirlpool again. Or a Maytag now that I know that Whirlpool makes them. If the Maytags are made the same as the Whirlpools then the Maytag repair man isn't lonely any more! I won't make the mistake of buying without checking soures like Consumer's Reports first.

We always bought Kenmore growing up but I have been without one of my set since right after Thanksgiving. We have had our front loaders for 5 years. My brother in law though is still using our last pair of a regular washer and dryer. We bought to save money with the amount of laundry we do for four people and a dog. I would not buy Kenmore again because of the service. Horrible, disrepectful service. They care nothing for your time and don't fix the problem. We all are lucky enough to afford washers and dryers but then you are stuck spending alot at the laundromat. I agree with some of the writers that they are not made like they used to be and you also need to do your homework before you buy.

I have owned a maytag washer and dryer for a couple of years now and have had NOTHING but problems with the washer. It started within a week of purchase and continued on from there. I had the repair man out about once a month for a year. It was horrible and terribly frustrating. It bounced around so badly, it scratched brand new tile, and overflowed several times, ruining surrounding cabinets. We finally returned it to get another one, and it has been nothing but a problem as well. I will NEVER EVER buy another Maytag. And to add insult to injury, I spent HOURS on the phone on hold trying to talk to someone at the Maytag head offices. At one point they even had the nerve to LAUGH when I told them of the problems I had been having with the washer. They are the WORST company I have ever dealt with in my life. I would clothes on a rock rather than have another Maytag appliance.

I bought a Hotpoint, washer and drier 21 years ago. These are made be G.E. Used them for 16 years with no problems at all. 5 years ago bought the same brand. Still no problems. Good machines at a good price.

We bought an LG front washer and dryer about 5 years ago. The washer spins the clothes so well, sometimes you will reach in and think they haven't been washed since they feel dry. That also means when you do dry, it takes alot less time. Other than tracking down an odor problem for a bit, we have had no problems with either. FYI: you need to wipe out the overlap of the washer rubber gasket as that is where solid things end up and if not removed causes the odor. EASILY DONE WITH A PAPER TOWEL.

Get the Whirlpool Roper. Cheaper because it is their brand that is used by many landlords and they saw an open market and filled it.
