The topic of stretch marks isn't a fun one. If you don't have them, you try to prevent them. If you have them, as most people do, you want to know how to get rid of them. Whether your stretch marks are the result of pregnancy weight, rapid weight loss or weight gain there are some treatments that can help eliminate those nasty lines.
Some of these treatments can be rather expensive -- laser, dermabrasion and chemical peel -- but there are other options. Stretch mark creams are less costly, but depending on the brand, some creams can set you back more than $100 for a 3-ounce bottle.
As you can see from the list below, the stretch mark remedy AOL users are searching for most is Strivectin-SD, with Hydroderm and Mederma rounding out the top three. Other popular stretch mark creams are Trilastin-SR, Revitol Stretch Mark and Tummy Honey. Although Yonka came in last place, it is still popular for its two different creams for during and after your pregnancy.
I've read that drinking a lot of water helps you develop fewer stretch marks since it makes your skin soft, therefore more elastic. It may also help if you eat foods high in zinc, like nuts and fish, and rich in vitamins A and C, like carrots and citrus. However, if stretch marks run in your family, then you'll probably still get them anyway.
Do you know of any stretch mark creams that did not show up on the list? If so, please tell us about them. Check out more from AOL Shopping or search for stretch mark creams on AOL Search.

Nobody has mentioned good old fashioned (& economical) Vitamin E. During that skin tight blue jeans ear of the 70's & 80's my butt & thighs were covered with stretch marks! Big ugly red ones on porcelain skin. An Amazing Cure!!! Just prick open a gel capsule or buy the oil at a Health Food store -Get concentrations of less than 12,000iu or it is very sludgy & hard to spread. If consistently used - applied at least every other night when the mark is fresh & hasn't had a chance to scar - meaning it is still red not white or lighter pigmentation and no raising or indention into the surrounding skin you may be able to get nearly 100% healing - try it. It worked for me.

In 1980 and 1986 I was pregnant. I used PURE cocoa butter from a stick at a little drug store. I walked around smelling like a chocolate bare all the time but behold, I have no stretch marks whatsoever! Stretch marks run in my family and my mothers were really bad. You have to be consistent and us it twice a day for it to work. Also, no mind smelling like a chocolate bar.

I do not personally have this problem, however my girl friend swears by Preparation H (I know it sounds eg), however she no longer has them. She said her dermatologist told her to place it on her eyes, and becareful not to get in eyes, because it shrinks the blood vessels that make your eyes dark!
It's worked for her and it's inexpensive. Just make sure you buy a tube and don't use an old one ;)

I have spent a fortune on all kinds of creams, but I still have not found one that helps. I am also using the acucups, combined with some baby oil as well as palmers and I am very satisfied because I am finally seeing some changes in my skin. I used to have the acucups massage done twice a week in a spa, but it became expensive, so I purchased my own set and now I do it myself at home.

Stretch marks run in my family. I had two kids, gained 60 pounds each, and I just used baby oil twice a day. With my second, my tummy was so big, I used extra virgin olive oil or vitamin E oil the last 3 months. Don't have one stretch mark. My kids are grown. I have a few on the outside of my thighs and my breasts from breastfeeding. Didn't think about that at the time.

Stretch marks are caused when the dermis or underlying layer of skin is stretched excessively. The body lays down a layer of collagen in order to hold the skin together which causes the appearance of stretch marks. It's the same process the body uses to repair any scar. There is no topical cream on the market that is effective because the molecules of the cream are too large to penetrate the outer layer of skin. The only thing proven to be half way effective is laser treatments, which can penetrate the skin and break up the bands of collagen resulting in a smoother appearance to the skin.

My family has a history of stretch marks. I have two grown children. My first, I used baby oil and the first 6 months for my second the same. My tummy was so big, I switched to extra virgin olive oil or vitamin E oil. I gained 60 pounds with both and not one stretch mark. I have a few on the outside of my thighs and my breasts from nursing them both. Didn't think about that.

I am sure there are a lot of creams and remedies for stretch marks and all of them are wonderful. However please don't forget that getting stretch marks or not doesn't depend only on heredetary. This "science" is not cut in stone. It also depend on your age, condition of your skin, your diet, hydration and even the place where you live and climat. As you get older you are more likely to get them since elasticity and hydration of your skin deminishes. This is why it is imperative to religeously apply rich lotions, butters, oils and creams on your belly, tights and breasts. Yes, everywhere!!! A lot of women complain that they don't work. I am sure some work better and some less, but the main issue is that most of the women just don't apply enough (3-4 times per day as usualy says on the label). And not often enough. If you're experiencing an itch - it'a already too late (your skin is depleated). If your skin had enough mosture and oils on it - it would not itch in the first place. Don't forget about the diet, a lot of nutrients come from within. So if you don't put it in there, it will be not coming. Fish is particularly rich with Omega fatty acids that are super important for not only your skin but development of your baby too. And last, but not least.... stretch marks are NOT heredetary! Don't forget that there is also a father involved into making you. So you can't rely on the idea that if your mother has them, you will have them too. After all you may have inherited your father's genes.
I am, myself, a good example of that.
Lastly, I am the owner of Sweetsation Therapy company that specializes in Organic and Natural Pregnancy and Baby skin care products as well as inovative baby carriers. I just had a meeting with a plastic surgeon and a lab scientist in Colombia, they had developed a cream for stretch marks that has been a success in the health test trials. They are pretty confident that this will be the cream of the year. If you like to know about it, e-mail me at mchaverra@rejuvenationstrategies.com and I will forward information.

I used to have pretty bad stretch marks and red scars around my belly region ever since I gave birth to my three kids.I had tried Vitamin E oil and cocoa butter which a number of people had recommended but unfortunately it didn't seem to work too well. My Doctor had even suggested that I go for a Tummy Tuck. I then recently read an article about a lady who supposedly got rid of her stretch marks using a particular cream. I tried it and it worked really well. It took a number of weeks but my stretch marks soon faded away. You can read the lady's article at the link below.
