Vinegar is very good for insomnia, 2tsps of honey, 2tsps of cider vinegar dissolved in warm water. Take a few sips before bedtime and if you wake up take a few more and go back to sleep. Inveterate insomniacs may need to do this a few times but the method will work eventually.

I have horrible insomnia. The things on the list that I've tried are Ambien (gave me hallucinations), Klolnopin, Benadryl, Lunesta (gave me an awful taste in my mouth--one of the side effects), Lavender: not oil, but certail lavender scent things... and I don't remember whether or not I tried Xanax... but there are a LOT more medications that I've tried (Rozerem (sp?), made me nauseous and I got maybe 10 minutes of sleep that night, along with some 'natural remedies' with the same 10 minutes of sleep result). Now, I take Trazodone (100 mg). That's the only effective medication I've tried... Though I feel the effects may be wearing off. I'm a college student, so I NEED sleep...

I got insomnia from stress over trying to rehome one of my neighbor's dogs because they couldn't keep her. Anyhow, I couldn't sleep because (stupid me!) I let the dog sleep with me on the bed like she did with my neighbors...and guess what? She had FLEAS!!! Stress turned to insomnia turned to more stress at work and so on it went for about 4 nights straight. Went to see the doctor when my mother came down to visit and he actually used the word "antipsychotic" (how embarassed was I!). Anyhow, turned out he said I wasn't to the level of needing anything that strong yet, so he prescribed that I take 2 or 3 Benadryl when we got back home and get straight to bed after that. Wouldn't you know it, 3 Benadryl and a healthy meal later (besides my mom putting our neighbor's dog in a crate in the backseat of her car), I was out like a light within the hour!
I'd recommend the Benadryl treatment to anyone who doesn't like the idea of dealing with some extremely potent drug. But, of course, discuss it with your regular doctor first. The worst symptom I got from this treatment was waking up with dry mouth (trust me, a SIGHT better than the symptoms I was having with that panic attack cycle of stress and insomnia).
Good luck!

Melatonin is always a good idea. It's a substance naturally secreted by the pineal gland that helps to regulate sleep and circadian rhythm. The presence of it in the body induces sleepiness. It's secreted when your body senses that it's dark out, and stops being secreted when light is sensed. Start off taking one tablet, consisting of 1mg active melatonin. You can get it at any pharmacy or drug store. Probably even grocery stores.

Get a sleep routine down, limit your caffeine intake after 3pm, NO TV in the bedroom and try eating fiber cereal with low fat milk 1-2 hours before bedtime...and if this fails try melatonin...it's a natural supplement that you can get in the drugstore-of course always check with your MD first before trying any over the counter meds.

When I can't sleep,I just take a shot of night time flu medicine like Nyquil or whatever store brand there is available.I'm out inside of 30 minutes

I have found that melatonin leaves me groggy in the morning. Perhaps I am taking too much. I take two 3 mg pills. I have found that benadryl works like a charm. I sleep fitfully and wake up refreshed.

Ambien is a joke.
By Gil on Oct 29th 2008 at 3:58PM
My doctor put me on Ambien and the first time I used it, I woke up in the shower with a smashed head. The second time, I woke up having dinner on my floor. The third time I was pulled over by the cops for driving to slow, the last time ,I was having sex with a three hundred pound ,toothless ,filthy slob. The part I hated was that I liked it.
