I helped a friend of mine move into a new apartment yesterday. But before we loaded all the furniture in to his new pad, we had to do some heavy duty cleaning. I was ready to charge the dust bunnies with a vacuum cleaner when he admitted that he didn't even have one. Not even a small hand-held! I almost dragged him to the store to buy one right then and there, but we had a truck full of IKEA furniture waiting. So, purchasing a vacuum had to wait too. I decided to check out the top searched vacuums on AOL Search to, hopefully, motivate him into finally getting one. In the meantime, I rented one of those combined vacuum cleaner and shampooers to really get the place clean.
Dyson Vacuums came in at the top of our list. I have seen their newest vacuum that rolls on a ball for quick turns, it is so innovative. They are great for people who need some allergy relief because a lot of their models come equipped with HEPA filters, which catch a lot of the things floating around your house that cause allergy symptoms. The Dyson Vacuum DC17 has a life timefilter built in.
There are a lot of different options to look for when searching for a vacuum. Most people want something light-weight with great sucking power. I personally think the best vacuums for this are canister vacuums. That way you don't have to fumble with changing vacuum bags.

As far as I'm concerned as soon as the robot vacuum cleaner came out every other type became an antique. I love my Roomba, I just turn it on and forget about it. I don't know if many people are familiar with Miele Vaccum Cleaners http://mielevacuumcleaners.tk/ but not only do they clean better than anything else but they're also best for people with allergies. So far it looks like eveyone posting here has an interest in the websites they are including with their posts. I have no such websites, but I do have an opinion on what vacuum is the best. At one time I sold Rainbow vacuums and I believe them to be the most efficient as far as trapping dust particles. In case there is anyone out there not familiar with Rainbow, it uses water inside a canister to trap dirt instead of a bag. There is absolutely no way any dust can escape, making it 100% allergy free. The biggest complaint people have is having to empty the water after each use. This is a small price to pay for knowing you are getting your floors as clean as they can possibly be. Also you can actually see the dirt you are extracting, which allows you to gauge how clean you get yor carpets, as the water will get less and less polluted with each use. It is a canister type, plus it uses water that HAS to be emptied every time you use it, so these 2 factors make it somewhat inconvenient compared to upright vacs. But for cleaning and variety of uses, at least in my opinion, it is the best system on the market.

Teresa... No, I am not a salesman now, but I was about 20 years ago. And at that time I was introduced to Rainbow. I had never heard of them until a friend brought one to my house to demonstrate one and try to sell me one. What really sold me was the many uses they have. For example, you can sit it in the middle of the room and let it run and it will clean the air. That is not possible with any other vacuum I'm familiar with. You can also buy fragrances to add to the water to make your house smell great. They have tremendous suction power, and you can actually hear all the dirt you are pulling out of your carpet if you put your ear to the hose. I do not benefit at all from telling people about Rainbows, but I do think they are the best so I like to spread the word to folks who want the best. Again, they require that you empty the water every time you use them, so for that reason people find them somewhat inconvenient. (If the water is not emptied it can damage the motor). But for overall cleaning I think they are in a class by themself.

Frankly those of us with Asthma, the bag less vacumes are a disaster for me. I have had horrible allergy attacks and trouble breathing when I empty the container. What were these people thinking ?Obviously not about those of us with respitory problems. I'll never buy a bag less vaccume again.

DYSON is the best vaccum out there. I've had mine nearly 2 years and it still works like brand new. I have a Great Dane who tracks in everything. My DYSON (with HEPA filter) is awesome. It's just mind boggling what fills that cannister when you make a few passes over "visibly clean" carpeting. I'm so happy with it I've sold other vacuums on Ebay (Electrolux can't compare, and Oreck though lightweight is less efficient and requires bags which get expensive!)
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DYSON VACUUMS, pick from their many models whichever best addresses your specific needs. You won't regret the purchase!

I bought a shark handheld vacuum. It worked great for the first two times then the belt burned up. I can't find a new belt, even on the Shark web site!

in my opinion who ever invented the "bagless" vaccuum was 1: an idiot 2: never vacuumed a day in HIS life!! All of these new fangled cannisters are annoying, more time consuming and filthy to empty and clean out. Give me my old fashioned bag that just pops out, throw it away and insert a new one. Cannisters my ass, what a pain in the neck!

I have to disagree with this post, because I have a dog, a Black Lab, who sheds, and I had every kind of Vacuum, you can imagine, and they all kept getting clogged up with the dog hair, and I would vacuum EVERY SINGLE DAY, its not like I let it build up on the carpet for days. I have spent so much money, on Vacuum cleaners and fixing vacuum cleaners, I was so aggrivated. UNTILL I bought a SIMPLICITY VACUUM, I know what some of you might say, they make sewing machines, BUT they also make VACUUM CLEANERS, I bought it at a VACUUM HOUSE, and I paid close to $400 for it, BUT it was one of the best investments I have made, comes with a GAURANTEE, and if something goes wrong, I bring it in, and the guy is just GREAT, fixes it at no cost or very little cost. SIMPLICITY is a GREAT VACUUM.

Hello, I own an a high end cleaning and restoration service and teach professional cleaners and restorers all across the US and Canada. Over the years I have used most of the highly regarded vacuums mentioned in the article. Many of them are very good, but I agree that as far as performance, durability, HEPA filtration, and value that Dyson is very hard to beat. The unit we use and recommend is the DC7. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles but offers great performance and value. The best place I have found to buy them is supplier in OH. I have owned a Rainbow vac. for many years. My Mother owned one of the first ones that was on the market,around the 1930"s, Very crude, but had the same concept. I could never use a bag type, or filter type vac due to allergies. Since the rainbow uses water to clean and filter the air, its the best one I have found. All vacs that use bags are a dry method of cleaning,therefore does emit dust and allergines in the air, you can smell a stale oder coming out. I love my Rainbow! I choose to use natures way with water to clean with. "Would you take a dry bath with powder"?If you havent seen a demo on these, you dont know what youve missed!!

I can't find a good electric broom for my kitchen floor. I had a Hoover but when it died, I stupidly threw it out instead of getting it fixed. Now everything is plastic and doesn't work good. Any suggestions on a good one?

I have a cleaning biz ....weekly vacation rental homes.
I tried all kinds of vacs.. (Orecks are a pain in the butt) and my canister Kenmore from Sears (I think it was about $200...8 yrs ago) is the BEST! For the $$$ I paid. It's not meant for heavy commercial cleaning yet has been used for that...it's quiet too. I used to have Electroluxes and they were excellent and quiet too.
I can't see paying over $2-300 bucks for a Vac!!!
Knock on wood, my Kenmore has not had any problems (8 years!) and I change the bag once every 2-4 weeks...the bagless ones still have to be emptied, and more often, or they are inefficient...so having a bag isn't an issue for me.
Electrolux used to deliver the bags to my door!!!! Nice customer relations on their part. They are just way too expensive now.

30 years ago, I had a hoover upright. the only reason why i got rid of it was because the wire from the handle to the base could no longer be repaired. Since then its been a steady stream of machines, mainly from walmart, nothing but problems. I'm leery of the dyson, I've heard orecks are good... but... like the other poster, about 20 years ago I too was a part time rainbow demonstrator and the unit I had I also used in my apartment. My place was never cleaner, plus, it was kinda fun to clean. I think it would work great in a ranch house where you don't have stairs. Unfortunately, I could not afford to buy what I was selling! I can't imagine how much they cost now, because it was over $1200 to buy them back then (if you got the attachments!)
