Unless you're a super hero, chances are you've needed to take pain medication before. And when you were looking for pain relief, you really needed something that would work fast to dull your pain. With migraines, aches, sprains and broken bones, the list of ways your body can hurt is endless. So when I got a headache yesterday, I decided to look and see what other AOL users rely on for pain relief. The widely known drug Vicodin came in at the top of our search list, probably because it can be used as a mild-to-severe pain reliever, depending on the potency. It is commonly prescribed for anything from pain after dental work to knee pain relief. Pain killers, such as Celebrex, are also a wonderful relief for those suffering from arthritis pain.
If you prefer a topical relief for your pain, a surprising medical treatment that I had never heard of appeared on our list. BIOFREEZE comes as a spray, gel or roll-on medicine and contains a special herbal extract from a South American holly shrub.
Some of these drugs are so strong that you need a prescription for them. Others you can find at an online pharmacy or your local pharmacy, like CVS. It all depends on how fast you need relief!

I have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and am treated in part with Methadone. I have been taking Methadone for several years now with relatively good control of my 24/7 pain.
Every time I see or hear a story about the multitude of problems caused by the widespread abuse of Oxycontin, I get a little more frustrated! The many problems caused by the abuse makes it increasingly more difficult for people with legitimate pain issues to access the narcotics they need.
I avoid telling people what type of pain medication I take, because the general public only knows about Methadone as a treatment for addicts.
Reports like the info I found through this article, essentially tell about the use of methadone as part of a treatment plan for heroin addicts! I often explain that Methadone is a pain killer and used as such. When they hear the word Methadone, many people, envision a long line of questionably looking addicts waiting for their dose of Methadone.

Migraines have too many causes for anyone person to assume you have all the answers. I too had a history of migraines and could not figure out why I got one everytime I went to church with my father. Until he told me it was the wine used for communion. He is Episcopalian which uses real red wine. I am Baptist and they use grape juice. Since I turned age 40, I get them consistently the week prior to my menses. Go figure, I have had a menstrual cycle since age 10 with no migraines.

I take butalbital with aspirin & codeine 30 mg for migraines---but I've started taking 120 mg. of Co-Enzyme Q-10---an OTC dietary supplement, available in drug & health food stores & some supermarkets. One daily Co-Enzyme Q-10, taken with a food containing fat, like meat or whole milk, gives energy, is good for the heart, and took away my migraines!!!! I haven't had one for a couple of months!!!

By far the best pain medication is OxyContin, hands down!!! Purdue Pharma, has engineered one of the best man made products of the 21st Century. Nothing compares. Take 4 80 miligrams OxyContins, and you will feel no pain whatsoever!!!

I had surgery on one knee & still have re-occuring pain. Capsatian is a good one to apply also. I have used Biofreeze & others. I also use Vicodin when it is painful. I was on Celebrex for a few years & after a test was taken off it due to it giving me kidney disease. One should get tested if on a certain drug for awhile.

who wrote this? neither celebrex nor soma are pain killers. poor journalism

Most of you did not understand the message of this article. It is not "pushing" pain killers. It doesn't say if you have migranes you need to take pain killers. It is just stating facts, and you obviously didn't read the end of the article where it talk about alternative, non-narcotic medicines. All of these anti-drug advertisements are brainwashing you people. You need to understand what you are talking about before you open your mouths.

BIOFREEZE is awesome for sore muscles and joints. It seems to penetrate the skin and get right to the sore spots. I only wish that its effects lasted longer.

Biofreeze is FANTASTIC!! It works immediately and for severe pain. I was in a car accident several years ago and tore my back all up...I couldn't lift or hold my arms out without wanting to cry. Instead of resorting to pain pills, I got Biofreeze...and it worked. Ben Gay and all the others were worthless. I have had several of my coworkers try Biofreeze and they had the same results. It has to be gotten through a chiropractor or online...not sure if regular doctors have it. It saved me, that is for sure.

Vicodin has become the standard for 'severe' pain relief as has Soma and Darvocet. OxyContin, Methadone, Ultram, and Darvocet are a CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES and usually given in only the most severe cases of pain (forms have to be in triplicate from the doctor and pharmacies tend to be VERY cautious about to who and how much they distribute). Celebrex, contrary to this article's statement is NOT a pain reliever, but an anti-inflammatory hence why it is given to arthritis or similar joint/muscle inflammations. Biofreeze is not available on the general market and must be special ordered as it is usually used by athletes (the closest OTC product would be Icy Hot or Ben Gay). The only things you can get on that list OTC are Tylenol and Bayer (Biofreeze if you count you have to mail order it, but BOY does it WORK!). Some of the stronger painkillers have a much higher risk for dependancy/adiction and should be very carefully monitored by a doctor or other specialist. In most of the cases of these medications, unfortunately, I know of what I speak - either for myself or from when my Father was dying of Cancer. The best OTC relief for headaches/migranes is Excedrin Migraine outside of that is a prescription medication called Maxalt MLT (a small tablet that works on the same principle as Nitroglycerine - it dissolves under the tongue and it has been no small blessing for relief of intensive migraines).

Migraines are not just caused by food allergies - but they can be. The other comment is use methodone as a method of last resort. Extremly dangerous drug but being more widely used by pain doctors because cheap. The other writer was right - the withdrawel is known to be worse than heroin. This drug was developed by the Nazi's incidentally. Try to avoid narcotics if at all possible - they can cause real misery. I know.

The one pain medicine that always worked very good for me was Hydrocodine. You need a prescription for this and it is addictive. I developed an allergic reaction from it after years of using it.
By Linda on Aug 16th 2008 at 6:11PM
Prescription pain medications are often abused, and this blog entry completely ignores that fact. You shouldn't be pushing drugs as potent and potentially addicting if used long term as Vicodin or similar - if a patient needs something like that for their pain, their physician or pharmacist will most likely recommend it on their own.
I had a prescription for a few days' worth of strong pain medication when I had my wisdom teeth removed two years ago. But other than that, on the occasional instances when I need a pain killer, I stick with ibuprofen.

I have myofacial pain and fibromyalgia. I currently go to pain management and take physical therapy. However, I also take pain meds, prescribed of course. I also take muscle relaxers, prescribed of course. Anyone in constant pain must have what works. A person on pain meds does not always get use to if IF THEY NEED IT. FOR THE PAIN..... I am not addicted and I have tried other meds but nothing has worked for years now. I hold a job down and function on a daily basis. Most people use them for the high.
