ew Lotus, but one of the throwback kinds like the one in 'Pretty Woman.' I must say that I was kind of surprised. You don't really see cars like that on a normal basis. But the driver looked like he was having such a good time!It made me start thinking about the cars that I have owned in the past. They have all been so utilitarian. I have been seriously thinking about purchasing a new car so maybe my next purchase should be more focused on fun. It would be great to get into something everyday that made me want to drive to work.
I decided to check out the sports cars that people were searching for on AOL Search. Even if I cannot afford a Lotus right now, there have to be some other options out there. I am not a huge fan of the Corvette or the Ferrari. But the Saturn Sky is kind of cute. I am more of an Audi TT or BMW Z4 kind of girl, but neither one made our top list.
Did your favorite vehicle make our list? Check out AOL Autos for more info. on cars or try searching for sports cars on AOL Search.

I'm going on 6-months of owning the 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP,Turbo, Vortec, 4-Cyl, 260 HP.... and it ROCKS! It's incredible and is truly THE hottest, sexy sports car. It's really a little rocket. I'm loving it.
I agree with SSuzy007 The Saturn SKY does not come close to comparison. check it out...
By T.T on Oct 15th 2007 at 3:52PM
What do you mean there's no comparison between the Solstice and Sky? Its the exact same car except for a couple of different panels and the interior.
And sorry, the Sky was/is meant to be the step up of the two. I'm not saying the Solstice isn't nice, I thought about getting one myself, but the Sky comes with more standard options and has more detailing in the interior and is more expensive for a reason.

Yea, MadChiyo, that's right, you spend your money on a Porsche Boxster, while for same money you could buy a 'Vette, which is pretty much superior in all performance categories. And you're right, I do drive a WS6 TA, and one of my most enjoyable moments I had in it is when I blew the doors off a Boxster driven by some arrogant woman who assumed she was driving a
real "performance" car. I agree, the upper level Porsches, Aston-Martins, Bentleys, Ferraris, and Lambos are incredible cars, but given that a incredibly small portion of the population could ever afford them, why would you expect a multitude of people doing searches on them? This guy's definitely a pretentious idiot.

"Porsches, no Aston Martins, no Bentleys - so it is safe that this list was made by some white trash, middle America, ignorant loser that sees the Corvette as the world's ultimate machine (I bet they drive a trans-am, a grand prix, or a Pontiac GTO)
What an embarrassment."
Yeah but the new upper-class Corvette would destroy any one of those cars that you just listed. They are going to be pushing 750 horses. I feel sorry for someone that pays a quarter mill just to be blown away by a Corvette. hahahaha

I have a 2007 blue mustang GT with white stripes, hood scoop, windows scoops and sides scoops. She's fully loaded, about $40,000. I love it. She has about 333 HP. I only drive one time week. Now she has
2000 miles. I love it.
Get one everybody.

.
a sports car is, for example, a '61 austin healey...
of the cars made today, i like my porsche 911.

Well said, Chuck. I drive a 2006 GTO and wouldn't trade it for anything. Well... maybe a '65 GTO or a '67 Chevelle. Aston, Bentley, and Lambo have their place, but I'll take my $100k saved and spend it on upgrades for my LS2...

Problem with aol's "top 10 sports cars" (searched) list: too many folks do NOT know the difference between "SPORTS" and "sporty".
Omitted cars that belong on a list of "SPORTS" cars:
~ANY Porsche (except the Cayenne)
~Honda S2000
~Mazda Miata/MX5
Included cars that do NOT belong:
~Mustang
~Mitsubishi Eclipse
By Chuck on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:11PM
What is poeple's problem with the Vette? Its an American classic. Considering it is in the top 10 fastest production cars of all time and it is affordable for many people (and way more affordable than the other 9 cars in the top 10), I'd say its a great car!
I went with a Sky (half the power of a Vette, but also half the cost), because Vettes are too common and the Sky is a limited production vehicle (how many have you seen so far?). but, it looks like the small brother to the Vette.
Eh, opinions are like @$$-holes...everyone has one.
By Tbard on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:14PM
why don't i see the nissan skyline on here? and why is eclipse on here? psssh.
By Annie Boo on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:16PM
Tbard--
1) 0-60 times are NOT what "SPORTS" cars are about...unless, perhaps, the 0-60 route has LOTS of corners, eh?
2) ANY Porsche-except a Cayenne--is more "SPORTS" than your Saturn...and many Cayennes will accelerate with your Saturn.
3) Boxsters ARE *convertibles*, eh?
-------------------------------------
Tbard said (proud of his ignorance?):
My stock Sky Red Line would take your Boxster from a digg. 0-60 in 5.2 seconds...your Boxster rates at best 5.3 and that's for the Boxster S. Anything else and now you're talking more than 6 seconds.
Sorry, but you paid too much for your mediocre "sports" car.
Oh, and mine is a convertible. :)

A few commments:
On methodology: The author seems to have relied exclusively on the data from the AOL search engine. She does not state what key words she used, but it is not unreasonable to assume that she used "sports car". Obviously, we should not be surprised when this method results in a list comprising the views of the greatest common denominator - tapping into the consciousness of middle class America. Perhaps there would be a different result if the method had been to track trends at major sports car auctions, or meta-analysis of recent journal-sports car magazines or data from actual race results. But, this does not invalidate the article. This is simply to recognize limitations and there are other limitations that I will not mention. The point is made.
Observation:
Without presenting alternative evidence it is safe to say that there can me great disagreement on what to count in a top ten list. Indeed, there can be great disagreement on what to count as a sports car in the first place.
Conclusions:
I defend the authors covert inference in a limited sense and it leads to an important conclusion. If the consensus of AOL searchers provides a list significantly different to your expectations about the nature of sports cars, it may be time to rethink what it means for a vehicle to be a sports car.
By angelett22 on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:40PM
"why is eclipse on here?"
Did you read the article or even the title of the list?
"Top Searched Sports Cars on AOL Search"
No one particular person made this list. Its just a list of sports cars that were searched the most. I agree the Eclipse sux, but its still considered a sports car and it is searched for a lot on AOL search.
By Tbard on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:20PM
And for all of those with expensive sports cars, other than the Vette and other GMs, can your car send you diagnostic reports to your email?
My Sky can...through On Star. How many can say that?
By Tbard on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:26PM
Madchiyo you faild to mention your ride.
I guess i would to if i had a pinto!
By Wallace on Oct 15th 2007 at 4:26PM
When it comes to cars, it is always a personal preference! Buy what you like, don't listen to the morons! I like lots of different cars from a '32 Ford high boy to American muscle cars and high-end Italian and German sports cars. It's all in what you like and what you can afford.
