When I was growing up, I insisted on having cats. I pouted until I had not just one, but two cats in my mom's house (and another for when I went to visit my dad). My dad's house quickly grew into a menagerie.
He currently has five cats and a huge Doberman pincher, Stella, or as he likes to call her "Sister" (as in MY sister). Now having all these pets can be fun if you like animals, but I know that it is not cheap.
Sister has a dog kennel, dog food and a dog bed to name a few things. And yes, she even has designer collars and a few outfits (even though dressing up animals goes against everything I stand for). But I am not in charge of what sister wears. She has quickly escalated her status to people status, so why shouldn't she have insurance and trendy clothing too?
As I have gotten older, I am less interested in pets than I used to be. I don't know if it is just because I am not as into animals or because I know about the costs and care required for them. I guess you have to weigh the benefits of having a pet with the costs and decide if your love for them is really worth it ... Yes, my dad still has Sister, I just did not realize how expensive she was ;)

It is no surprise that the pet industry is huge. Animals are are companions and confidents. They ask for nothing but our care and love. I only hope that we all return the favor. But unfortunately the news is riddled with inhumane acts. But people can make the difference. There are people that make a difference. From a veterinarian/musician Noel Lorica http://www.noellorica.com that has created an jazz instrumental song inspired by pets to the person that picks up a stray on the street & cares for them. I'm glad we care for pets it keeps us compassionate. http://www.talktothevet.com

Why in the world would someone who "doesn't know if I am into animals or not" be given the assignment to write this article. It was very uninformative and not what the headline lead you to believe it would be. Leave the writing of informative pet education to someone who knows they enjoy animals.

Is anyone else having a problem getting to the most recent posts?

I'm a cat person myself. I like german Shepherds and Collies but they cost so much to feed. The SPCA is the only organization I would consider giving money too, also.

For Mutt lovers, there now is a new test to determine their genetic backgrounds. Look at the web site www.doggiednaprint.com. This test will tell you what genetic background your dog came from..to start, ancient dogs that are hunters, herders, wolf-likes or mastiffs. Once you join the club and check out your dog's DNA, you can come back to the site any time to check for more information. It's fun and the latest way to understand your pet. A similar test is done for human genealogy...since we learned what is the human genome. Now the canine genome is also known, so you too can learn about your best doggie friend.

Why are you people so technical. I love my doggie. She brings joy to my life. What would you be spending your money on otherwise? CD,s, make-up or some other bullshit? Better spent on your pet.
By The Brit on Aug 18th 2007 at 1:19PM
Why are you all so technical. Either you love your doggie or not. I will spend at least as much as I spend on hair color, health club, furniture, etc. to keep my dog and or cat in good health. Those of you who do not want or can't afford this should probably not adopt a pet!
By TheBrit on Aug 18th 2007 at 1:43PM
Yes I am having a problem getting to recent posts and I would like to respond to the cat people. It is very hard for dog owners to understand your woes, but we are trying. My best friend loves her cat, but honestly I just don't get it. My dog wants to see me when I get home, Weeps and cuddles with me when I'm sad and barks if I'm hurt. Does your cat do this?
By TheBrit on Aug 18th 2007 at 1:49PM
akcmh, you said it all!
By patty on Aug 18th 2007 at 1:42PM
Hey sorry to say this again, but I love cats! But reallistically do you feel the same as dog lovers do? Do cats get excited when you come home, Weep when you do or protect you from danger? Just asking, I could be wrong.
