My favorite memories as a little girl are of my family getting a beach house in Sandbridge Beach in Virginia. I knew that no matter what, every year my extended family would be together for one week out of the summer and I always looked forward to it. After hours of sun and sand , we would settle in for dinner and intense rounds of Mario Kart where I insisted on being Princess Peach (woohoo!)
Things changed as I grew up and it became harder to get the family together. I have been looking at taking a beach trip with some of my friends so I thought it would be a good idea to see what vacation rentals people were looking at on AOL Search. The Outer Banks (another personal favorite of mine) tops the list. It is followed by Florida and Myrtle Beach vacation homes.
Do you have any suggestions about the best vacation rental spots? If not, try searching for vacation rentals on AOL Search or check out travel deals on AOL Travel.

I have to agree with Sue, about Santa Barbara. I grew up in Santa Barbara County and for "real living" ( not just a couple of weeks vacation ) there is no place like it. Beautiful area, not over-populated and it never got colder than 60 degrees and never got hotter than 75. 80 degrees would be considered a "swealtering" day in the summer. It really is the "air conditioned" area of California. How I miss it!

Sandbridge is beautiful, but it has been "found" over the past few years. Many condo buildings have gone up and the beaches are more busy(still less than commercial areas). The house prices have gone up considerably with beach houses being renovated to beach mansions. We still go because of tradition with our children, but we are looking for a substitute of "Sandbridge past" in another area...if there is one.

Kathy, It's so strange I read this and then read your post. I grew up and live in Edmonds WA. and all of my fondest summer vactions were spent on Whidbey Island. We always went to a liitle beach called Mutiny Bay. It's not far from the ferry at Clinton which we road over on. They rented little 2 story chalets that I can still 25 years later remember perfectly. There were I believe 5 of them all lined up and we rented more than one for everyone. It was exactly as a beach house vacation should be. There was a boat storage and launch next to it and a long pier for boats. Whenever I smell salt water, 2 cycle boat motors and and a little grease they used on the launch tracks I'm instantly taken back there. Since I don't live far from there I drive over from time to time. Sadly, the chalets finally went away around 15 years ago. You can still get there and there is a house that rents there that you can find listed online. But that charm of a small family run business is gone. Every vaction I takes is measured against those perfect vactions. As far as the military, they are on the other side of the island and have little impact on the south end. Fort Casey (long shut down and is a park) is near and many of the small towns are still the same. You are quite correct about your feelings on spending time there.

Isle of Palms, SC and Wild Dunes Resort are wonderful for children and Charleston is only 20 minutes away. It is a wonderful relaxing beach vacation that is still close to a charming city with lots of activities. We have been going there spring and fall for the last 6 years.
